Michigan Lake Map Gifts: How to Choose the Right One

If someone you love has a lake (a cottage they grew up at, the place they fish every summer, the lake they finally bought a house on), a map of that lake is one of the few gifts that means something the day they open it and still means something twenty years later.

We make lake pieces at every price, from a $16 ornament to a framed resin map. Here’s how to pick the right one, and what we need from you to make it.

Start with the lake

We draw every shoreline from the Michigan DNR’s inland lake data, the same survey data behind the state’s official lake maps. That means your lake’s bays, points and islands are where they really are, not a rough outline from a clip-art file.

When you order, tell us:

  • The lake’s name and county. Michigan has dozens of Crystal Lakes, Long Lakes and Round Lakes, so the county tells us which one is yours.
  • Any text you’d like, such as a family name, “Est.” year, or the name of the cottage.

We’ll email you a preview before we cut anything. If your lake isn’t in the state data (a few small or private lakes aren’t), we’ll let you know before you’re charged.

Pick a size and a style

Lake ornament: $16

The outline of your lake with its name and coordinates, on a birch ornament. It’s an easy stocking stuffer. Order one for everyone in the family who’s spent summers at the lake.

Lake coaster set of 4: $38

Four thick birch coasters engraved with the lake’s shape, sealed so they can be used every day. They’re a favorite housewarming and closing gift, and they ship free.

Engraved lake map: $65

A larger single-layer map for the wall, engraved on birch with the lake name and coordinates.

Custom lake map with resin water: $249

Our signature piece. The land is laser-cut from wood and the water is hand-poured, tinted resin, so it catches the light like the real lake. It’s framed and ready to hang, and it ships free. Each one takes a lot of hands-on time, so we only make a limited number before Christmas.

Who it’s for

  • Cottage families. A map in the cabin, or a coaster set for everyone who shares it.
  • New lake homeowners. Lake coasters and maps make a closing gift that buyers actually keep.
  • Anyone who moved away. A lake ornament is a small piece of home on the tree.

How long does it take?

Ornaments and coasters are usually made within a few business days. The framed resin map takes longer. If you’re ordering for Christmas, order early; we’ll post our last order-by dates on the site as December gets closer.

All of our maps are decorative only. Not for navigation.
